Luna Rossa's entrance into the America's Cup was its participation in the 1999 teams Louis Vuitton Cup. The boat, with Francesco De Angelis at the helm, breasted the tape before America One in the final ninth regatta. Winning the Louis Vuitton Cup, the series of preliminary regattas necessary to confront the New Zeland team, America's Cup Defender. In the America's Cup Match, the Italian Team was overpowered by the strong Kiwi defenders. The New Zeland Team had the better of De Angelis and His team. Immediately after the final regatta, the Punta Ala Yacht Club become the challenger of record for America's Cup 2003.

Althought the Luna Rossa team never made the challenge official up to august 2004, they were the first to put their Valencia base into action and the first to train for over 3 months during spring and summer 2004.
